Know where ticks may be found
Nova Scotia advises people to watch for ticks around wooded areas, shrubs, long grass and leaf litter. In a yard, that makes lawn edges, garden borders and shaded vegetation worth paying attention to. You do not need to search for ticks yourself to tell us which parts of the property concern you.
Keep up with basic yard care
Cut the grass and remove leaf litter where practical. Think about the routes people use across the yard and the spots where children or pets spend time. These steps can make the property easier to maintain, but they do not replace personal tick precautions.
Check after time outdoors
The province recommends regular tick checks after outdoor activity. If you find an attached tick or have a question about a bite, use Nova Scotia’s tick safety information or contact 811 for health guidance. A yard treatment is not a guarantee against ticks, so keep up the recommended checks even if you have had professional service.
